Project Access

Project Access is a pro bono project to help students have access to a variety of mentors around the world to be given the same resources as those more fortunate to attend Ivy League or Russell Group universities. This project focused on designing the website in a way that both students and mentors can use the site throughout the entire application journey instead of it becoming redundant and sites such as 'whatsapp' and 'slack' are used in replacement.

/ Research- User Interviews

Project access is a student run organisation which meant that we had very little access to resources. Therefore we decided to conduct a range of user interviews with existing and pre-existing mentors and mentees.
"So little contact with PA, felt that he was alone for a lot of the time."

"The website isn't used to communicate with."

"Didn't use the website at all after applying."

/ Understanding the problem- User flow

Once user research had been conducted and several client calls, the user flow was understood and we could create a clear journey to highlight touchpoint, and where the problems occurred.
The main issue that Project Access had was providing a useful resource site, many of the mentors or mentees found that once they completed the application form they never returned to the website. The client mostly provided updates via WhatsApp or email.
When the user is then accepted onto a programme after a tedious wait, the main method of communication between the mentor and mentee would be via 'slack', this makes the website completely redundant as it's simply there to inform the user of the initial application. However, the user is still in the process of applying to the actual universities itself and still requires information concerning the course, however the mentee is expected to do the research themselves or the information is provided via email/slack from the mentor.
This provided helpful insights into where opportunities lie to fix these issues.

/ Solution

/ Solution

The focus of this project was to redesign the platform to provide a much more efficient method of applying and gathering knowledge of the university course they are applying for. The solution for Project Access was to enhance the application journey, so we had a simple dashboard which allowed for the student to apply in the same area, track their progress and make adjustments. We also provided a communicative method for both mentors and mentees. Additionally, the mentor can help provide resources with real-time updates during their mentees application process. The mentor is also able to use their space to track how many students they have and decline any pairings they believe would not be a good match.
We delivered mobile and web wireframes and a UI kit for their internal team to complete.
